What shipped, and when

User-visible changes in every release. Run fox update to get the latest; it checks the release signature before installing anything.

  1. UnreleasedOn main

Guardrails by impact, a Blackbox that misses nothing it can see, and a better SQL workbench

    • Agent guardrails count rows changed, not WHERE clauses: a per-table limit on an agent’s UPDATE or DELETE, and a per-agent row budget over a time window (fox guardrail).
    • Blackbox anchors can be kept in an Object Lock bucket (fox blackbox anchor-target), and fox-verify reads them from there.
    • Copy results as TSV, CSV, Markdown, JSON or INSERTs, and stream a full result to CSV, JSON or Excel with fox export.
    • Per-person query history, never the results, with saved queries and suggestions as you type (fox history).
    • An object browser with each object’s CREATE script (fox schema), and a data grid to sort, filter and edit rows.
    • The Blackbox records what its event triggers miss: every five minutes a catalog scan writes changes made with the triggers stopped, and roles, memberships, databases and settings, which they never see (fox blackbox scan).
    • Row tracking: when each row of a tracked table was made and changed, and who changed it (fox track).
    • Personal-data discovery in Enterprise: scan a branch for where it holds personal data, JSON documents included, review findings from masked samples, and keep it current as new columns appear (fox pii).
    • An access review report in Enterprise: who can reach what, with which keys, and who has gone quiet (fox access review).
    • The console bundles its fonts, so opening it contacts no other site.
    • Fixes: a branch in use is no longer suspended, Realtime wakes a suspended branch and tells a client resuming from a point it cannot replay instead of silently skipping ahead, and a removed container takes its Docker volume with it.
  2. v2.2.1

    Switch editions in place

    • fox upgrade --edition enterprise or standard, with the licence shown and accepted first; data untouched.
    • Install Enterprise from the console.
  3. v2.2

    High availability across machines

    • A standby on another machine, replicating over TLS, with automatic failover behind a witness and failover drills.
    • Opt-in zero-data-loss mode with synchronous commit, and read-only sessions served by the standby.
    • Realtime subscribers keep their place through a failover.
    • Cross-site request refusal, browser security headers, and imports and pipelines that run as the requesting account.
    • A warning when backups share the database’s disk.
  4. v2.1.1 – v2.1.2

    Fixes

    • A fix for a console Realtime crash.
    • Activate a licence from the console.
  5. v2.1

    Realtime for applications

    • fox realtime doctor and prepare make tables ready to stream, recorded in the Blackbox.
    • A front door at /realtime/v1 with fox-realtime:// connection strings and stream-only keys.
    • Transaction framing with ?transactions=1, and an activity meter (fox realtime activity).
    • The TypeScript and Python SDKs can subscribe to the feed.
  6. v2.0.1

    Maintenance

    • Toolchain and release tooling updates.
  7. v2.0

Enterprise, and the Realtime change feed

    • Signed licence files and evaluation licences.
    • The Realtime row-level change feed, with a stream route and a console page.
    • Writing signed anchors, writing policy rules, impact analysis, change requests, Blackbox export and pipelines move to Enterprise. Checking stays free.
  8. v1.0.1 – v1.0.4

    Polish

    • Older installs can update again, and the installers can no longer hang on a download.
    • The new FoxByte logo everywhere.
  9. v1.0

    Two editions from one tree

    • Standard and Enterprise, built from the same source.
    • The SQL console becomes a workbench: multi-statement scripts, line numbers and error positions.
    • Session tokens are hashed at rest.
  10. v0.5

Change requests and a friendlier first run

    • A branch’s schema changes can be reviewed as a change request and applied to main (fox request).
    • The first run seeds sample data, opens the console, and fox check diagnoses an install.
    • The Blackbox shows changes live, and fox backup verify proves a restore works.
    • An agent’s UPDATE or DELETE with no WHERE is refused. pgvector is bundled.
  11. v0.4

    Maintenance

    • Documentation and CI.
  12. v0.3

    Safe by default

    • Loopback listeners, a setup token and TLS that fails closed.
    • Branches belong to their maker, and every database role has its own password.
    • The Blackbox guards and records TRUNCATE and agents’ data changes; anchors are signed; a security log is added.
    • A remote S3 backup target with Object Lock, and scheduled backups.
    • Signed releases, build attestations and an SBOM.
  13. v0.2

    PostgreSQL 18

    • Fresh installs run PostgreSQL 18; installs made on 16 keep 16.
    • fox backup export and restore, and fox pg upgrade to move between majors.
    • A more resilient setup that finishes an interrupted install.
  14. v0.1

    The first FoxByte release

    • Instant copy-on-write branches with suspend and resume, behind one gateway on :6432.
    • The Blackbox: a hash-chained record of schema changes, with checkpoints, anchors and branch-before.
    • A policy gate, backups to object storage, point-in-time restore and a hot standby.
    • Imports from Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB and files, the Agent Branch API, the MCP server and the web console.

Stay on the latest.

fox update installs the newest release, and never one whose signature fails.
